Dr. Kress will discuss the extensive research behind the book and the advanced technologies used to identify individual tree species and understand their evolutionary relationships. About the presenter

Dr. John Kress, Ph.D.
W. John Kress, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Scientist and Curator Emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and former interim Under Secretary for Science at the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Kress received his education at Harvard University and Duke University where he studied tropical biology, ethnobotany, evolution, and ecology. He is a taxonomic specialist on the tropical Zingiberales, which includes heliconia, ginger, and banana. His books include Plant Conservation – A Natural History Approach, The Ornaments of Life – Coevolution and Conservation in the Tropics, and, most recently, Smithsonian Trees of North America.
